NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Fiber bowls used at Chipotle and Sweetgreen contain "forever chemicals" linked to cancer, a new report finds.
The report from the New Food Economy finds that the bowls are exposed to chemicals that cause cancer.
The New Food Economy says they tested 14 fiber bowls from locations of eight different New York City restaurants, including Sweetgreen and Chipotle.
Other restaurants tested include Dig Inn, Dos Toros and Little Beet.
All the samples, they say, contained PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals."
Manufacturers use the chemicals to help the bowls hold hot, greasy food, but the Environmental Protection Agency says the compounds don't break down in the human body and can accumulate over the years.
The use of these chemicals also means the bowls aren't entirely compostable, the report says, explaining the toxic chemicals could seep into the soil
