Brooklyn woman, 25, dies in rock climbing accident at nature preserve

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 25-year-old woman from Brooklyn died after she fell 50 feet while rock climbing at a nature preserve in Ulster County on Sunday.

David Sobel told the New York Post his daughter Lauren Sobel was climbing with two other people at the Mohonk Mountain Preserve on Sunday afternoon when she lost her grip and fell.

Lauren was certified to lead climbing excursions, her father told the outlet.

“She was three feet above her hook and she was going to put another one in and that’s when she fell, and apparently there were three different safety measures taken and all three failed,” he said.

Lauren worked as a municipal bond analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and was an “avid rock climber,” her father said.

“The girl grew up in Alexandria, Louisiana. Taking off and going to New York City by herself and getting a really good job at Bank of America as an analyst — a lot of people in the hometown would call that an adventure," he added.
