NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Citi Bike has removed all of their pedal-assist electric bikes less than a year after launching them due to complaints from riders.

In a statement from Citi Bike, they revealed that they had received numerous reports regarding braking issues.

"We recently received a small number of reports from riders who experienced stronger than expected braking force on the front wheel. Out of an abundance of caution, we are proactively removing the pedal-assist bikes from service for the time being. We know this is disappointing to the many people who love the current experience — but reliability and safety come first."

A report from The Daily News says one braking issue led to a 59-year-old Upper West Side resident "flying" over the handlebars and breaking his hip while riding one of the e-bikes.

The pedal assist-bike will be replaced by classic pedal bikes.Like 1010 WINS on Facebook and follow @1010WINS on Twitter to get breaking news, traffic, and weather for New York City.
