CORONAVIRUS IN NYC: Deaths surpass 16,000, cases now over 150,000

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – New York City's coronavirus death toll surpassed 16,000 Saturday as the number of cases in the five boroughs topped 150,000.

Officials reported 10,961 confirmed deaths and 5,309 "probable" deaths, bringing the citywide toll to 16,270. The total on Friday was 15,848, with 10,746 confirmed deaths and 5,102 probable deaths.

The number of cases meanwhile rose from 146,139 on Friday to 150,576 on Saturday—a rise of 4,437. The figure was 141,754 on Thursday.

A total of 39,571 people have been hospitalized in the city.

The median age of patients with the virus is 51, officials said, with 52 percent of cases being males and 48 percent being females.

  • Bronx: 33,950
  • Brooklyn: 39,912
  • Manhattan: 18,701
  • Queens: 46,786
  • Staten Island:  11,159

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Twitter that he would now be holding his daily briefings Sunday to Friday, reserving Saturdays for answering questions on social media. 

"I will keep communicating with you. I will keep telling you what's really going on," the mayor said in the Twitter video posted Saturday. "What your city is doing for you; what we can do to help; all the challenges we are facing, but also the solutions we are finding."
