Correctional officer dies in crash following car chase in Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) --  A correctional officer is dead in Newark after being trapped in a car police say.

The officer identified as Omar Martin was killed early Saturday morning by a driver of a stolen Nissan involved in an active police chase.


Officials report that roberry suspects in the stolen vehicle were being chased by Hillside, New Jersey police when it drove into Newark and t-boned the victim's Mustang.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS officials.

Three others may possibly be injured after the vehicle in pursuit then struck a second vehicle at approximately 2:51 a.m. at the intersection of Bragaw Avenue and Aldine Street police say. 

Martin was a veteran officer and worked at the Northern State Prison in Newark.

Two people in the fleeing vehicle were hospitalized and are expected to survive, state officials said.

Hillside police say they are still investigating the incident and have not announce any criminal charges.
