BAYONNE, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A multiple alarm blaze that broke out in a Bayonne apartment early Friday left two dead, officials say.
The fire was reported just after 2 a.m. at 3 Islandview Court.
The fire happened on the third floor and went into the attic where the fire engulfed the third floor and the attic space due to a double roof that was renovated over the old roof ten to 15 years ago.
This allowed the fire to expand and made the fire hard to get to, according to Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver.
Three people were injured from the fire, two of them are now deceased, according to Weaver.
Two victims were rushed to Bayonne Medical Center where a man was pronounced dead and a woman was hospitalized in critical condition.
The woman later died according to fire officials.
The two people killed were believed to be a couple in their 70s.
The third person that was injured refused medical attention.
After several hours, firefighters were able to control the flames.
There were 56 units originally evacuated from the building. Most of the tenants were allowed back into the building but 18 have been displaced.
Those people are under the care of the red cross and the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management.
Fire officials asked people to avoid the area.
