Schools, synagogue temporarily close after Westchester man, his wife and children, test positive for coronavirus

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man who lives in Westchester County and works in Midtown Manhattan has tested positive for coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed on Tuesday. The man in his 50s -- who works at the law firm of Lewis and Garbuz, P.C. at 60 East 42nd Street -- and has been hospitalized in critical condition with an underlying respiratory illness and is the second confirmed coronavirus case in New York.

He was initially treated in Westchester at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville on Feb. 27, and then transferred to New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan, according to Mayor Bill de Blasio.


The patient has not traveled to China or to any other countries on the watch list.

He had, however, traveled to Israel then Miami, according to the mayor. 

His two sons are being tested for coronavirus and are isolated at their home.

Health officials said one of his children, a student at Yeshiva University, is experiencing some symptoms.

The Modern Orthodox Salanter Akiba Riverdale Academy also known as SAR Academy in Riverdale has closed over virus fears, as the child of the coronavirus patient attends there.

Westchester Day School in Mamaroneck and the Westchester Torah Academy in White Plains are also closed.

On Tuesday afternoon, Westchester County Health Commissioner Sherlita Amler said that Temple Young Israel in New Rochelle will close for the foreseeable future, and that all who attended services on Feb. 22 and 23 should self-quarantine.The governor said that this appears to be a case of "community spread" COVID-19, that cannot be traced back to China or foreign travel.

More cases are expected as the virus outbreak spreads and testing increases. "You're going to see an increasing spread,'' Cuomo said.

"We are working closely with our State and Federal partners to ensure we are taking the highest precautions to keep New Yorkers safe," de Blasio said in a statement.

The state is also testing two families in Buffalo who recently returned from Italy. The governor said they are being tested and are quarantined.

A 39-year-old health care worker was the first person to test positive for coronavirus in New York.
