Will Calloway was walking home near 1 and 9 at 6:15 a.m. when he heard screams. A block later he saw the raging fire at the home on Washington Street.
"It looked horrible. I never seen anything like that before. Fire was like blasting out the bottom, basement door and everything," he said, "I just seen the people like running out the house screaming, and then I heard someone screaming from the window, the top window."
The screams were coming from a second floor bedroom, where a woman in her 40s had lived for years. She did not make it out. Three other people got out on their own. No firefighters were hurt.
