NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An off-duty cop on his way home from work was held Thursday morning, by a mugger in the East Village.

It happened around 6 a.m. on 3rd Ave and East 13th Street.

The off-duty cop did not comply with the mugger's demands, so the mugger hit him in the face and head with a gun before running away.

Residents told CBS2 they were surprised to hear about a mugging in their neighborhood.

"I didn't think something like that would happen in front of my house," said resident Clara Fettawa. "Honestly, I didn't think it it would be a bit dangerous like that. It's stressful to be living here and think that any time you can go out someone can try to rob you."

"I guess you're always surprised, but I guess anything can happen. I'm not too worried about it," said East Village resident Sam Howard.

The officer, whose age and gender was not revealed, was taken to Bellevue.
