FDNY: Fallen firefighter got trapped in highly combustible Harlem movie set

Firefighter Michael R. Davidson

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Investigators for the fire department say extremely flammable panels used for a movie set produced toxic smoke when they caught fire in a basement in Harlem last year.

Firefighter Michael Davidson became separated from other crew members. His air ran out when he couldn't find the door in the St. Nicholas Avenue building that housed a nightclub where the movie "Motherless Brooklyn" was being shot.

The report from the FDNY Safety Command was obtained by the Daily News. It says there were also communication issues and the fire department was unaware of new partitions that had been erected as part of the set.

The sprinkler system also didn't work.

The report concludes that in the future, the city's Office of Media and Entertainment should notify the FDNY when it issues a permit for a production and should tighten the rules on the use of certain materials.

Davidson, 37, was posthumously promoted to lieutenant. He left behind a wife and three children.
