NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Tuesday was graduation day for hundreds of probationary firefighters in New York City.
13 of the graduates are children of firefighters who were killed on September 11th, 2001 and another six are children of firefighter fathers who died of 9/11-related illnesses.
There are also 120 Veterans that graduated today, representing every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
With 16 women graduating, this is the second largest group to do so in FDNY history.“This class includes the largest group of legacies in Department history, with twenty-one of our Probies continuing the brave legacies of their fathers who gave their lives protecting our city,” said Fire Commissioner Nigro. “This group of Probies also includes the second largest number of women to ever graduate from the Fire Academy. These women will now inspire many more women and young girls across our city to one day follow their footsteps into the FDNY.”
