NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) – There are fears of another power outage like the one that left a chunk of Manhattan's West Side in the dark for hours last Saturday as a heatwave grips the Tri-State.
Con Edison Incident Commander Milovan Blair says the power company is prepared but that a lot of power is being used by New Yorkers to stay cool.
"We're estimating about 11,500 megawatts. Tomorrow, which is Sunday, we expect to read our all-time peaks for Sunday," Blair said Saturday.
There were scattered outages late Saturday—the largest being in Jamaica, Queens, where some 1,400 customers were affected. Another 600 customers were without power in Richmond Hill, Queens.
More than 9,000 PSEG customers on Long Island and over 1,000 JCP&L customers in New Jersey were also in the dark Saturday. Hundreds of the customers were still without power Sunday.
Despite the scattered outages, de Blasio said the problem didn't appear to be widespread in a call with 1010 WINS Saturday.
"Overall the electrical grid's doing well," he said.

Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are forecast to reach nearly 100 degrees, with RealFeel temperatures up to 115 degrees.
De Blasio directed owners of office buildings over 100 feet tall to set thermostats to 78 degrees Fahrenheit through Sunday to conserve energy.
