NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The U.S. Navy canceled its plans to have a military flyover along Manhattan on Friday, the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, after the planned event was widely condemned.

“As per the US Navy, today's F-18 jet flyover on the Hudson River has been canceled,” NYC Emergency Management tweeted shortly after 11:30 a.m.

An F-18 jet had been scheduled to do a flyover on the Hudson River towards the Verrazzano Bridge at 3:30 p.m.

The plan quickly proved controversial, with people saying it was tone deaf and inappropriate.

“Is someone in the Pentagon deliberately trying to trigger PTSD in NYC??” Council Member Mark Levine tweeted.

“Are you out of your mind? Cancel this immediately,” Congressman Max Rose wrote on Twitter.

Brandon Borrman, the vice president of communications at Twitter, wrote that "this seems like a really bad idea, verging on completely tasteless."

According to WABC, the flyover was canceled after the Mayor’s Office reached out to the Department of Defense.

A spokesperson for the mayor told the station, “City Hall had formally asked DOD not to proceed with this, and we're glad to hear it isn't happening.”
