NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An iconic paper plant is no more.
An eight-alarm fire has destroyed the Marcal Paper Mills plant in Elmwood Park.
Firefighters from all over Bergen County have been fighting the fire since Wednesday evening.
Witnesses said whipping winds sent softball-size embers flying for blocks, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.
And although there have been other fires at Marcal, officials said they've never seen one like this before.
Five homes in the area have been evacuated, and air quality in the area is still being monitored by DEP.
