NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- There will be 48 additional subway stations that will have MTA's new tap-and-go technology installed, officials announced on Tuesday.
OMNY is the MTA's new system designed to allow riders to pay their fares without swiping their MetroCard, but through a contactless credit card or mobile-phone wallet.
Starting in December, Penn Station, will have the technology installed along with the 6 train stops between 51st Street and 125th Street in Manhattan, the 4 train stops north of 125th Street and on the 1 train between Rector Street and Columbus Circle, the agency said.
Every month, the MTA plans to announce newly OMNY-compatible stations and the the full roll-out is expected to be finished by next fall, when riders will no longer need to buy a MetroCard in order to use an unlimited pass, according to MTA Chief Revenue Officer Al Putre.
All MTA buses will be equipped with OMNY by December 2020 while Metro-North and LIRR will have to wait until 2021.
OMNY technology, is currently available on the 4, 5, 6 trains between Grand Central-42 St and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr, and on Staten Island buses.
Riders will be able to use their MetroCards until July 2023.
