Murphy extends NJ's public health emergency, reports 7 new COVID-19 deaths

TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Gov. Phil Murphy extended New Jersey's public health emergency for an additional 30 days on Thursday after reporting seven new COVID-19 deaths and 374 new cases.

Murphy first signed an executive order declaring a public health emergency, as well as a state of emergency, on March 9. He has extended the public health emergency each month since then, most recently on Aug. 1.

"... (E)ven as the rate of reported new cases of COVID-19 decreases, the ongoing risks presented by COVID-19 mean that many of the state's current measures must remain in place, both to reduce additional new infections and to save lives," he wrote in Thursday's executive order. The state of emergency is still in effect.

Of the COVID-19 test results that came back on Wednesday, 374 were positive, pushing the state's cumulative total to 190,613, Murphy said. The new deaths brought New Jersey's death toll to 14,141.

In addition to the 7 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 deaths, the state is also investigating 1,780 probable deaths, its COVID-19 tracker shows.

As of Wednesday, 455 people in the state were hospitalized with confirmed or probable COVID-19 cases, 77 of whom were in intensive care and 29 of whom were on ventilators.
