NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It's beginning to look a lot like New Year's...

Times Square is getting ready for New Year's Eve next week and the famously glitzy ball arrived Friday morning and got a makeover.

The ball's theme is celebrating the "Gift of Goodwill," and features 192 new Waterford Crystal triangles including three pineapple cuts that signify the traditional image of hospitality and goodwill.

"We want people to take pause and look for the good in situations as opposed to the opposite," said Waterford Crystal's Tom Brennan.

Times Square Alliance's Tim Topkins is aware of what this ball drop means to a worldwide audience of about 1 billion people, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.

"The last year has been tough - the last decade has been tough -- and people I think use New Year's as a chance to reset and to say 'Hey, how do we let go of the things that we don't love about the past but how do we also look forward with a sense of hope?'" Tompkins said.

More than a million people are expected to squeeze into Times Square to see the ball drop on Tuesday night, 1010 WINS' Drew Scott reported.

In addition to putting last-minute preps on the ball, the NYPD security preparations are underway. "The experience of ringing in the New Year in New York City is remarkable, and I commend the thousands of members of the NYPD for their own remarkable undertaking in ensuring the safety of thosecelebrating," said Police Commissioner Dermot Shea.

"Working closely with our law enforcement partners, the NYPD routinely does a great job planning and securing large-scale events around New York City. This collaboration is critical in carrying outour mission of delivering a safe and enjoyable event," Shea added.
