Wind turbine topples in the Bronx, destroys billboard & crushes car

Damage from billboard crash in the Bronx

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A large illuminated billboard came crashing down in the Bronx on Monday.

The incident happened at around 1 p.m. in Co-Op City when a wind turbine at 500 Baychester Avenue collapsed or was blown onto it.

State Sen. Jamaal Bailey told 1010 WINS it's a good thing it didn't happen on a school day. "I started to think about what could have happened," Bailey said. "Children regularly congregate in the area where the billboard and wind turbine fell. That was my first though: I'm glad school's not in session because somebody could have been seriously, seriously hurt."

"A wind turbine should not be able to be taken down by the wind," Bailey added.

Luckily, nobody was hurt but cars were damaged in the parking lot of a nearby shopping center.

Bailey told the Dept. of Buildings to "come on down and do the right thing by us."
