TRENTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A New Jersey assemblyman has asked the state police colonel to fine Gov. Phil Murphy for violating one of his own COVID-19 executive orders by marching in a Black Lives Matter protest on Sunday.

Republican Assemblyman Jay Webber, whose district includes parts of Essex, Morris and Passaic counties, sent a letter to New Jersey State Police Colonel Patrick Callahan on Monday claiming Murphy "openly and brazenly defied" Executive Order 148, which increased the limit on outdoor gatherings in the state from 10 to 25 people.

Murphy took part in anti-police brutality protests and events in Hillside and Westfield on Sunday, photos he posted on Twitter show.

In his letter, Webber said Murphy's participation in the events "appears to merit a criminal citation." The lawmaker penned the letter to aid "the ongoing effort to clamp down on those who would commit acts that our Governor has lectured us would threaten the public health and safety of us all," he said.

"As you yourself have warned, 'Because lives are at stake, enforcement action will be taken without hesitation against those who are blatantly placing the lives of others at risk,'" Webber wrote to Callahan.

"I trust you will uphold your public duty to the fair and consistent enforcement of our laws at that time," he added.

Murphy's office didn't immediately respond to request for comment on the letter.
