NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An out-of-work New York City union contractor still hasn’t received his unemployment benefits, despite the fact that he and his wife have called the Department of Labor “10 times a day” for more than two months, she told 1010 WINS.

Carrie Slevin’s husband is one of millions of Americans who filed for unemployment benefits as COVID-19 spread throughout the country this past spring, she said in an interview with 1010 WINS’ Al Jones.

More than two months later, Slevin’s husband still hasn’t received payments from the New York State Department of Labor, she said.

“He has called — I’ve also called — I would say, 10 times a day since April 19, trying to get through to unemployment, only to be disconnected,” she said.

The two have taken turns waiting on hold, she said. When they have ended up getting through to a live person, they haven’t received any answers.

A spokesperson for the Department of Labor told 1010 WINS someone would reach out to Slevin and her husband about his application.

While Slevin herself is employed, she says her salary is not enough to cover all of her family of five's expenses. They have suspended their mortgage and car payments to make ends meet, she said.

“Frustrating does not even begin to describe it,” she said. “I’m at my wits’ end.”
