NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday signed an Executive Order requiring hotels and short term rentals have travelers from restricted states fill out quarantine forms before giving them access to their rooms.
The announcement was made during the mayor's daily briefing where he explained that failure to comply will be a class B misdemeanor.
"This is going to be now a rule here in New York City because we have to get serious about the fact that there's a real danger here," de Blasio said. "We have to confront it we have the right tool to confront it, which is the quarantine but now people have to take that seriously, so this executive order would be another step to make clear to everyone how serious it is, and then a real consequences for those who don't comply," de Blasio said.
Starting this week, fines will be issued for refusal to comply.
He also said he is concerned about travel and New Yorkers coronavirus hotspots and then returning home and urged city residents to avoid traveling to states with high or surging cases of COVID-19.
"If you have a choice, go to a place that is not on the list of states that are having a problem," he added.
He reminded residents to comply with the mandatory 14-day travel quarantine.
