NYC to delay school reopening until Sept. 21, mayor says

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday announced that New York City is delaying the start of school 10 days until Sept. 21.

The delay will allow teachers to go back next week for more prep time.

"Every single school with have testing. It will be done monthly. It will be rigorous," de Blasio said.

According to the mayor, Sept. 10, 11, 14, and 15 will be dedicated to preparations.

Starting Sept. 16 Instruction to begin remotely for students and on Monday, Sept. 21 school buildings will be reopening at "full strength."

According to United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew, independent medical experts have stamped this plan. "We now can say NYC’s public school system has the most aggressive policies and greatest safeguards in any school system in the country," he said.
