NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- ESU was called in to help a wounded hawk stranded in the Financial District.
Images on Twitter show NYPD officers rescuing the wounded bird on a sidewalk.
"Apparently it flew into the window and landed right where it was. It was just standing there. Looked dazed but wasn't moving," ESU detective Keith Connelly said.
"We were able to just gently put the sheet on top of the hawk, was able to grab the hawk and just gently put it into the cage," Connelly said.
The officers managed to get the wounded animal into the pet crate and transfer it to the city's only wildlife rehab center on the Upper West Side.
Wild Bird Fund Director Rita McMahon says the red tail hawk is recovering and will soon be on its own.
"We did 6,800 birds last year and mammals. Just over half of them were pigeons. The other half were 120 different species of birds," she said.
