NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Officials said the NYPD had to shuffle funds around in order to provide officers with more overtime as presence is increased ahead of the holiday weekend.

Last week, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea increased weekend patrols and changed the schedules of hundreds of uniformed officers under the rank of sergeant to work either Sunday through Thursday or Tuesday through Saturday.

By doing this, some payroll funds would shift by not having to call in extra officers to work Labor Day Weekend or other weekends and pay a full day of overtime for those who had a Monday through Friday schedule, the New York Post reports.

It would also help in combating the uptick in gun violence the report adds.

On Sunday over 1,000 shootings were reported this year, with four months still left in the year.
