NY Racing Association discriminated against Spanish-language announcer: suit

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Black Spanish-language horse-racing announcer who worked for the New York Racing Association was paid half the salary his white counterparts received before he was fired in June, a new lawsuit charges.

Luis Grandison, who worked as an announcer at Belmont Park and two other New York state racetracks for six years, has sued the New York Racing Association claiming he was discriminated against, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

While Grandison was earning $60,000 a year working as the association's first full-time Spanish-language announcer, several white English-language announcers who worked for the New York Racing Association had six-figure salaries, the lawsuit claims.

One of those announcers was getting paid more than $200,000 before he retired this year, and "performed the same primary race-calling duty as Grandison, except in English," Grandison's lawyer wrote, according to the outlet.

Grandison asked for a raise in 2018, but his request was denied, the outlet reported. The New York Racing Association let him go in June, according to the outlet.

The association didn't immediately respond to the Post's request for comment on the lawsuit.
