NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An NYPD officer captured on video hitting a protester by opening the door of a moving police vehicle has been placed on modified duty, Commissioner Dermot Shea said Tuesday.
Officials said the May 29 incident occurred during a police brutality protest over the death of George Floyd, on Classon Avenue in Brooklyn.
A video shared on social media shows a protester with a red bandana standing in the street as several police vehicles drive by.
Once an unmarked the vehicle approaches the demonstrator, the passenger door opens and hits him.
"As part of our obligation to provide accountability when officers fail to reflect the high standards we set, the NYPD is taking action regarding an episode in recent days that raises serious concerns," Shea said in a statement Tuesday. "While the investigation is still ongoing, there is no doubt in my mind that based on the seriousness of what we’ve seen in recent days, transparency is critical."
The officer who has yet to be identified was placed on modified duty following an investigation by the Internal Affairs Bureau.
Shea also adds that the case has been referred for further disciplinary action.
The decision comes on the same day Vincent D'Andraia, another NYPD officer was charged over a separate video that showed him shoving a woman during a different protest in Brooklyn.
