NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD said an officer critically wounded a female driver who used a stolen car to pin her against another vehicle near Yankee Stadium in the Bronx Monday morning.
The incident occurred before noon near Sheridan Avenue and East 162nd Street in the borough's Melrose section.
Police say the officer -- a 24-year-old woman -- fired on the black Hyundai Sonata around 11 a.m. Monday after it suddenly reversed and hit her.
The driver is hospitalized in critical but stable condition with gunshot wounds to her chest and torso. Two others at the scene were arrested. A manhunt is underway for a fourth suspect.
The officer was being treated for injuries to her hip, leg and pelvis.
Chief of Detectives Terence Monahan said the car was stolen during a string of violent weekend robberies in the Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn. He said officers were responding to an alert from a license plate reader indicating the vehicle was nearby.
The group stole a car in Brooklyn on Sunday, before continuing to run afoul of the law on Monday. They allegedly committed a robbery in Manhattan, followed by two more in Brooklyn where they're also accused of fleeing the scene of an accident and committing another carjacking.
One female police officer was taken to the hospital with injuries to her hip, leg, and pelvis. The driver was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds to her chest and the left side of her torso. Three suspects were taken into custody at the scene -- two of those suspects were also wanted in connection with an additional carjacking and robbery in the Bronx, police said.
