NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A late-night fireworks show over the Hudson River on Thursday night took many New Yorkers by surprise, with some taking to Twitter to voice their displeasure.
The fireworks were recorded for the MTV Video Music Awards this Sunday, NYC Emergency Management told the New York Post.
The display was initially scheduled for 8 p.m. but severe weather delayed the show until about 11 p.m., when three barges began setting off the fireworks.
On Twitter, many people weren't sure why the fireworks were being set off. Some confused it for thunder rolling through the area. Others were just annoyed.
"What are these for?! My poor pup is shaking! It sounded like gun shots at first!" one woman tweeted.
"Too late for this nonsense!!!" another user tweeted.
"That finale had us thinking the city was under attack," someone else wrote.
"Thought it was round 2 of the storm," another user tweeted. "Scared us all to death! Not cool."
"Did no one get the memo that we are sick of late-night fireworks?!" one woman added.
Not everyone disliked the surprise display.
"Quite a show!" one woman tweeted.
"Beautiful fireworks display on the Hudson river," tweeted another user.
