NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- If you're allergic to bee stings then Bryant Park was not the place to be on Friday.

About 250 people -- amateur and professional beekeepers and bee enthusiasts -- made the annual pilgrimage to pick up their seasonal supply of bees.

Valerie Gutman said she was all abuzz about starting her new hobby to make honey. She seemed to know her stuff as she waited on line for her first box of 12,000 bees which she'll take to her rooftop hive.

"They treat it basically like their home. Most of them will stay in the hive working and like building up the honeycomb and then the others will go out around the surrounding miles just finding flowers," she said.

While it's unusual to have 3.6 million bees buzzing on a truck, Andrew Coté sells them once a year from an apiary in Georgia, and says the bees are all around the city.

"I got em at the UN, I've got them here in Bryant Park, I take care of them at 1 Bryant Park for the Durst Organization for the Brooks brothers, they're everywhere," he said.

It takes experience to keep hives growing and many people say they need more in the spring because they can't keep them through winter.
