AUDIO RUNDOWN

00:00 – Jersey City Shootout - 1010 WINS reporter Al Jones was among the first broadcast reporters to arrive at the scene of a shootout at a kosher market in Jersey City, NJ.  Al was so close to the action that the police moved him from his view of the attack.  Reporter Roger Stern also arrived on the scene to report on the anti-Semitic assault that would leave six people, including a police officer, dead.

13:04 – 7th Ave Helicopter Crash - On June 10th, a helicopter crashed into a building in midtown Manhattan killing one person, the pilot.  1010 WINS reporters Juliet Papa and Al Jones were sent to the scene to cover the impact of the crash.  Officials say the pilot who died when his helicopter slammed into the roof of a midtown Manhattan skyscraper wasn't authorized to fly in limited visibility.

20:33 – Decision on NYPD officer involved in Eric Garner case - The death of Eric Garner and his dying words of "I can't breathe" launched a debate in the city and across the nation over race and the NYPD's use of force.  Five years after Garner's death, the city terminated officer Pantaleo after it was determined that he violated department policy by restraining Garner with a prohibited chokehold in 2014.  1010 WINS covered the events leading to the termination and the reaction.

26:49 – Brigitte Quinn interviews incoming Police Commissioner -  In 2019, the state passed a law that would dramatically change the criminal justice system. Beginning on Jan 1, 2020, those arrested for non-violent offenses would no longer need to post bail. The move touched off a debate, and law enforcement warned of unsafe streets. At the same time, proponents argued the reform would finally provide equality for those of color and low income. 1010 WINS devoted more than 30 stories to the issue, including an exclusive interview with the incoming NYPD Police Commissioner who questioned the efficacy of bail reform and its impact on safety.

29:15 – City Council Speaker Corey Johnson calls for NYPD to apologize for Stonewall on 1010 WINS - In an exclusive interview on Facebook Live with 1010 WINS, the city council speaker called for an apology by the NYPD for the raid on the Stonewall Inn, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the event. The following day the Police Commissioner apologized.  Over the years the NYPD had repeatedly said they would not issue an apology, making this a truly historic moment.

35:10 – Black History Month segment highlighting Miss Jessie's hair care products - 12-part series on-air and online, highlighting the achievements of the local people and programs of the African American community. The series has been honored with the prestigious NABJ Award for Excellence 10 out of the last 11 years.

36:27 – Bottom Line for Small Business segment highlighting 1010 WINS Small Busines Grant Challenge - A program built to help small local businesses.  The backbone of any community is its small businesses. As they go, so goes the neighbor-hood. Our mission was simple: offer $10,000 to a deserving small business to help them grow that business.

37:34 – Story covering annual Tunnel to Towers - A run to honor hero firefighter Stephen Siller who died on 9/11.

38:30 – Hungerthon segment auctioning chance to record a newscast with afternoon anchor Larry Mullins - We devoted more than two weeks of public service announcements and vignettes, highlighting the charity and its mission. On the day of the 'Hungerthon,' we raise money through various auction items on air from 6a-7p.

39:25 – Newscast - In one week, the NYC area was shocked by two major stories, the mugging, and murder of a Barnard College freshmen and the attack on a kosher deli in Jersey City.  Meanwhile, in national news, the House Judiciary Committee was preparing to vote on sending the articles of impeachment to the full House.  On the afternoon of December 12, the newscast was packed with important local and national stories, throw in a gridlock alert day for the holidays, and 1010 WINS was a must-listen during PM drive.
