NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 16-year-old boy had to be rescued Monday after he plunged more than 50 feet down a shaft while performing a social media stunt at the Queensboro Bridge, sources said.

The teen was climbing the bridge when he fell around 9 p.m. and had to be rescued in an operation involving dozens of members of the FDNY and NYPD.

Citizen App video showed a massive emergency response, with firefighters scaling the bridge, helicopters in the air and police boats in the East River.

FDNY Deputy Chief Nicholas Corrado said 75 first responders were involved in the dangerous and difficult rescue.

"This was a confined space operation, which is a very difficult, time-consuming, man-powered, intensive operation,” Corrado said. “It involves high-angle equipment, ropes. We have to monitor the air and create high points.”

The FDNY pulled the teen out of one of the bridge stanchions, Corrado said.

He was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center in serious but stable condition.

The NYPD will interview him once he recovers.
