PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Two New Jersey residents are facing charges for allegedly selling cannabis outside a licensed marijuana dispensary in Phillipsburg.

A 35-year-old woman from Belvidere and a 38-year-old man from North Arlington, Bergen County, were arrested following an eight-week investigation into their alleged scheme that undercut The Apothecarium, a state-licensed dispensary for medical and adult-use recreational marijuana, Warren County Prosecutor James Pfeiffer announced on Friday.
The pair's endeavor had been alerted to police when they were spotted selling outside the South Main Street shop, highvalleylive.com reported.
He told the outlet that the suspects parked their car in front of the store and displayed a sign offering marijuana for sale there at a discount.
Unlike regulated marijuana, the prosecutor said regulated marijuana is grown in a state-sanctioned facility under controlled conditions.
According to Pfeiffer, a search warrant was executed on a 2003 Pontiac Montana minivan driven by the male suspect and a 2008 Hyundai Elantra driven by the lady after an investigation by the prosecutor's Narcotics Task Force, the Phillipsburg Police Department, and the New Jersey State Police.
Around seven ounces of marijuana were seized during the search, along with both cars and $540.
The suspects are charged with one count each of distribution of over one ounce of marijuana and conspiracy to distribute over one ounce of marijuana. Both were released pending a court date.
A spokeswoman for the dispensary did not immediately respond to a message asking for comment from the outlet.
