YONKERS, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Possible gang activity in Yonkers left five people injured, two critically, during two separate shootings Saturday night, officials said at a Sunday press conference.

The first shooting occurred on Locust Hill Avenue around 9 p.m. when two 18-year-olds were wounded, according to police.

A female victim was hit in the elbow and a male victim was hit in the chest and possibly has a punctured lung. Both were brought to a nearby hospital where the male remains in critical condition.

"The initial shooting took place during a memorial service at a park, that seems to have started this chain of events," Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said at the Sunday morning briefing.

Soon after, less than a mile away around 11 p.m. on School Street, three more people, between the ages of 30 and 42, were struck by bullets in the back or chest. The victims were all taken to the hospital where two remain in critical condition.

"I think it's fair to say that there might have been a gang presence at that memorial service at that location and it was a target of opportunity," said Sapienza, who believes the weapons used in each shooting were illegal.

Descriptions of the suspects have not yet been released and no arrests have been made yet.
