NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Six people are dead after a single car went off a roadway and crashed in Newark on Friday night, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced.

The accident happened at about 10:47 p.m. at the intersection of Raymond Boulevard and Blanchard Street in Newark, prosecutors said.

The vehicle, containing six people, was driving down Raymond Boulevard toward the Route 1 and 9 southbound on-ramp when it somehow went off the overpass, became airborne and struck a support column for the Pulaski Skyway. Upon landing, the car caught fire.

All six people in the car were killed. The victims have not yet been identified.

Authorities are working to determine what led to the crash, and an investigation is ongoing.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office will hold a press conference on Monday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m. to provide an update on the investigation.
