LONG BEACH, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A 10-year-old Long Beach boy died "unexpectedly" during a Little League game on Friday night, his team announced, while dedicating the rest of the season to him.
The Lido Beach Little League shared with supporters the tragic news on Facebook on Saturday.
"It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we share the painful news about the passing of our dear friend and teammate Lazar LaPenna," the league said. "10-year-old Lazar unexpectedly died last evening from a medical condition he [had] suffered from. He was on the ball field with family, friends, and team mates when the tragic episode occurred."
The team shared its "deepest sympathies" with his mother, Monique, father and coach Gregg, brothers Gerry and Blaze, and the entire LaPenna family.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with them all at this time. ... The remainder of our season will be dedicated to the LaPenna family and will be played in honor of their son Lazar," they added.

Long Beach Public Schools, where LaPenna attended as a fourth-grader at East Elementary School, also announced the "terrible loss."
"This tragedy is sure to raise many emotions, concerns, and questions for students and staff, particularly for who are close to this family," said Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Gallagher.
"All of our schools have a Crisis Intervention Team made up of a professionals trained to help with the needs of students, parents, and school personnel at difficult times such as this," she added.
Gallagher said counselors will be available all week for students, parents and school personnel who need any assistance.
