Boy on bicycle fatally struck by driver on Long Island

COPIAGUE, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- A 13-year-old boy on a bicycle was struck and killed by a driver on Long Island over the weekend, Suffolk County police said Monday.

The boy was riding the bike in the northbound, right lane of Dixon Avenue, near Caboto Avenue, in Copiague around 9:20 p.m. Saturday when he swerved into the northbound, left lane and was struck by a Toyota Corolla, according to police.

The boy was rushed in critical condition to Nassau University Medical Center, where he died from his injuries on Sunday, police said.

The child was later identified as Jose Luis Calderon, of Amityville.

The 22-year-old driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and was not injured.

The Toyota was impounded for a safety check.

No arrests have been reported.
