NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A 4-year-old boy died in a drowning at a New Jersey home over the Memorial Day weekend, while a 9-year-old girl survived a similar incident at a backyard pool in Connecticut, officials said.
The boy was pulled from a pool at a home in North Brunswick on Saturday evening, according to police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
First responders rushed to call around 7:45 p.m. of a child not breathing at a residential pool, authorities said, without specifying on the location of the home.
The boy was rushed to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding the drowning are under investigation.
A day later in Connecticut, a bystander pulled an unconscious 9-year-old girl from a backyard pool at a home on Westwood Terrace in Danbury, police said.
The bystander rendered first aid, and the girl was conscious when the fire department arrived at the home. She was evaluated and will be OK.
As is always the case going into the summer months, officials have been warning about the dangers posed to swimmers at beaches and pools. Just last week, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced several initiatives, including an investment in municipal pools, as well as money to hire more lifeguards and swim instructors amid a nationwide shortage.
