NEWARK (1010 WINS) – A young girl was killed in a dog mauling in Newark on Tuesday night, prosecutors said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed its homicide task force is investigating the death.

The 18-month-old girl was attacked by at least one dog at a home near Wakeman Avenue and Second Avenue in the Lower Broadway neighborhood.

The child was rushed to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The dog or dogs involved are believed to be pit bulls. It wasn't immediately clear what happened to them.

The dog attack came less than a week after a pit bull mauled and severely injured a 22-month-old boy in East Orange last Wednesday. Three other people were also injured. The dog was fatally shot by police, officials said.

And in Manhattan last month, a pizza worker was critically injured when he was mauled by a pit bull and beaten by its owner after asking the owner to put the dog on a leash inside the Flatiron District pizzeria where he worked, police said.
