NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A mother and her son were injured Monday after a fire, sparked by cooking oil, engulfed their home in New Jersey, according to authorities.

The blaze erupted at around 6:30 p.m. at a residence on Lawton Avenue in Cliffside Park, according to Cliffside Park Fire Chief Gregory Yfantis.

The mother was deep-frying food when she briefly turned away, causing the oil to catch fire and spread through the home, according to Yfantis. Officials said she had tried to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher before the firefighters arrived but the fire got out of control.

Her adult son was on the top floor when the fire broke out, according to officials. Both were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

The son sustained third-degree burns and the mother suffered second-degree burns.

An investigation is ongoing.
