NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Connecticut high school hockey game ended tragically on Thursday night after a player died following an on-ice collision.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. after the player, Teddy Balkind, fell on the ice during the game. Another nearby player could not stop and crashed into him.
Balkind was taken to Greenwich Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries from the accident, Greenwich Police said.
Balkind was a 10th grader at St. Luke’s School, a private institution in New Canaan. His team was playing against Brunswick School, another local academy, at the Brunswick School's campus.
Mark Davis, St. Luke's Head of School, shared a statement about the matter with 1010 WINS.
"Our community is mourning. Yesterday, we lost a precious young man in a tragic accident. Both St. Luke’s School and Brunswick School are in shock as we work to support our students and families. St. Luke’s singular focus at this moment is to care for our devastated community," Davis said.
Brunswick School also expressed their sympathy for the family in a statement to 1010 WINS.
"We are saddened beyond words. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the boy, the players and coaches on both teams, the entirety of the St Luke's School community, and our own students and families,” said Thomas Philip, Brunswick's Head of School. “Tragedies such as this are hard to process and impossible to understand. We will do all we can in the coming days and weeks to help and support those in our community and in the St Luke's community.”
