KINGS PARK, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — The former Kings Park Psychiatric Center on the Nissequogue River State Park property is considered one of the scariest places on Long Island.

The abandoned asylum has been rumored to be haunted for years and often draws thrill seekers on Halloween, but parks spokesperson George Gorman said it's not ghosts that trespassers should be concerned about if they illegally come onto the property.
"The buildings, some of which are over 100 years old, are dangerous. They've been decaying. There's asbestos and other dangerous chemicals within them," Gorman said.
Extra patrols and the closing of roadways leading to the center will begin Friday through Halloween to stop trespassers and prevent any mischief.
The center open in 1885 and closed for good in 1996.
Many of the property's 50 buildings have been torn down and Gorman said a master plan for the property is being developed with the public's input.
"Part of that plan will determine what might be the best options with regard to the buildings themselves — which are in need of demolition, which we should preserve because of the historic integrity of those buildings, and then what amenities the park should have to make it so that it's enjoyable park," Gorman said. "There's been suggestions of athletic fields, wineries, farmers market."
The master plan should be completed by the summer of 2022.
