NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 5-year-old boy from Shirley was hospitalized on Tuesday after he ate THC edibles branded to look similar to Starburst candies, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The boy reportedly received the candies while trick-or-treating on Halloween in Suffolk County’s seventh precinct, which includes Shirley.

The candy was correctly labeled as “Medicated Starburst Gummies” and the packaging identified the product as containing THC.

The resealable package had been opened when the boy received the candy, but it did not appear to have been tampered with.

The boy was treated at Long Island Community Hospital and released.

Police believe Tuesday’s events were an isolated incident, but encouraged parents to check children’s Halloween candy regardless.
