COLD SPRING HARBOR, N.Y. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A Long Island custodian threatened “mass harm” against a Long Island school district after he was denied a promotion, Suffolk County police said Thursday.
Jimmy Martin, 57, was arrested Wednesday night at his home in Huntington in connection to threats he’d made in recent days, according to cops.
He was charged with make a threat of mass harm and held overnight ahead of a scheduled court appearance Thursday.
According to police, Martin had applied last week for a promotion with the Cold Spring Harbor School District. When he didn’t get it, he allegedly made threats against the district to coworkers on Dec. 8 and Dec. 11.
On Wednesday afternoon, someone tipped off a school administrator, who called police.
Police were seen Thursday at the Cold Spring Harbor Junior/Senior High School, where Martin was assigned. His salary was $96,000 in 2023.
In a statement, Superintendent Jill Gierasch said Martin worked evenings and did not have direct contact with students. He was reassigned to his home as the investigation continues.
