UWS high-rise fire kills 1 woman, critically injures another

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – One woman was killed and another critically injured in a high-rise fire on the Upper West Side early Thursday morning, authorities said.

Firefighters raced to a 14th floor apartment at the 15-story Verdi co-op building on West 73rd Street shortly after 3 a.m.

Inside a bathroom, they found a 77-year-old woman, believed to be a resident, and 41-year-old woman, believed to be the resident’s home health aide.

Both women were unconscious and suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.

The 77-year-old was admitted to Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

The 41-year-old was given chest compressions at the scene and rushed rushed to Mount Sinai West, where she was pronounced dead. She hasn't been identified.

The fire marshal is investigating the exact cause of the fire. It’s suspected to be an electrical issue.

The fire was brought under control around 4 a.m. and contained to the single apartment. No other injuries were reported.
