NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 13-year-old boy was killed in a moped crash in Queens on Monday afternoon after the driver swerved to avoid an open car door and crashed into a truck, police confirmed to 1010 WINS.
It happened just before 12:40 p.m. near the intersection of 45th Avenue and 162nd Street in Flushing, authorities said.
The moped's driver, also 13, was taking the pair south down 162nd Street when he swerved to avoid a driver's side door that opened in front of them, police said.
Investigators said that the teen lost control of the moped and collided with a truck that was also traveling south on 162nd Street.
"The passenger fell off the moped and came in contact with the rear wheel of the truck," the NYPD said in a release. He was later pronounced dead at an area hospital.
The moped driver is in stable condition at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
Police said that the driver remained on the scene. No criminality is suspected at this time.
The investigation is ongoing.
