NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A man and woman, 61 and 71, were randomly shot when gunfire broke out near a park in Brooklyn on Saturday night, police said.

The shooting happened at Powell Street and Livonia Avenue at about 10:30 p.m., right near Livonia Park in Brownsville.

A 71-year-old woman was shot in the right leg and the torso, and a 61-year-old man was shot in the left leg, authorities said. Officials previously reported the man's age as 70.

The victims were transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center in stable condition.

Police said that the victims were innocent bystanders, and did not know one another. They were attending a gathering for a mutual friend at the time of the shooting, officials said.

According to the latest NYPD data, through June 9, there have been 35 shooting victims in the 73rd Precinct—which encompasses Brownsville and Ocean Hill—this year. That number is a 105.9% increase when compared with the same period in 2023.

It was not immediately known what led to the shooting.

There have been no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
