COLCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — Two Western Connecticut State University men’s lacrosse players were killed and a teammate was injured in a car crash in Colchester, state police and the university said.
The wreck Friday afternoon killed Jacob Chapman and Tyler Graham, both 18 and from Colchester. Trey Massaro, 19, of Dalton, Massachusetts, was flown to a hospital with apparently serious injuries, according to police.
University President John B. Clark said in a statement that the three were on the men’s lacrosse squad and lived in the same dorm. Counselors will be available to students there and have met with the lacrosse team’s players and coaches, Clark said.
Chapman was driving the others in his family’s 2010 Nissan Altima westbound on Route 354, also known as Parum Road, when he tried to pass another vehicle, a police accident report said. The car ran off the road, hit a guardrail and trees, and came to rest on an embankment.
Police are continuing to investigate the collision.
Colchester First Selectman Mary Bylone’s office said in a statement that Chapman and Graham “were deeply committed to their community and to their schools.
“Full of promise and hope for the future, they represented the best of Colchester’s young people,” Bylone added.
Both Graham and Chapman were first-year students studying business administration. They had attended Bacon Academy in Colchester together, where they played attack, midfield.
Massaro is a first-year student studying justice and law administration after attending Wahconah Regional High School in Dalton, Mass., where he played long stick, midfield.
