The NYPD said the incident happened on East 61st Street and Third Avenue just before 9:30 a.m.

According to a preliminary investigation, a 32-year-old male passenger entered the truck while it was facing northbound on East 61st Street. It remains unclear why, but immediately following the passenger’s entry, the 66-year-old truck driver suddenly moved the vehicle forward.

The truck, a 2019 Hino Box Truck, then mounted the sidewalk, struck a fire hydrant, struck a bicyclist on the roadway and hit a pedestrian standing on the sidewalk, police said.

The operator of the vehicle was able to made a right turn onto Third Avenue, where the vehicle came to a rest.

The two victims – identified as 37-year-old Taurino Rosendo Morales and 47-year-old Delfino Eduardo Maceda – were rushed to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.

The 32 year-old passenger was also taken to New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for minor injuries.

Police said the truck driver remained at the scene.

No arrests have been reported in connection with the incident.

The investigation is ongoing by the NYPD's Highway Collision Investigation Squad.
