
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Three people are dead and two others are injured after a boat overturned off the coast of Staten Island on Sunday afternoon, police said.
Authorities received a call reporting a vessel in distress near Newport Walk and Breezy Point at about 12 p.m. The boat was in the Ambrose Channel between Staten Island, Sandy Hook, New Jersey and the Rockaway Peninsula.
The NYPD Harbor Unit and U.S. Coast Guard responded.
Five people were removed from the boat and taken to nearby hospitals, officials said. Three were pronounced dead.
One person remains in critical condition, and another individual is stable.
Identities of the deceased are pending proper family notification, police said.
The investigation into how and why the vessel flipped is ongoing.
