NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Four members of the Genovese crime family and two associates pleaded guilty to racketeering charges in New York City, the Department of Justice announced Thursday.
Two captains Ralph Balsamo, 51, and Nicholas Calisi, 63; two soldiers, Michael Messina, 69, and John Campanella, 47; and two associates, Michael and Thomas Poli, 37 and 64 respectively, participated in various organized crime enterprises.
Prosecutors specifically targeted the defendants for extortion and gambling schemes.
“We remain committed to protecting the people of the Southern District of New York from being preyed on by organized crime,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said. “Today’s pleas demonstrate that those who swear a lifetime allegiance to criminal organizations will be prosecuted, no matter their efforts to insulate themselves.”
All of the defendants face up to 20 years in prison for racketeering conspiracy.
